The Orville first released on Hulu back in September of last year. The show is mainly headed up by FOX and was created and stars Seth MacFarlane. Although it initially received heavily mixed reviews from critics, audiences seemed to like it way more, with the show becoming one of the most watched Hulu Originals. Below we will be covering the renewal status and any additional details we currently know about the second season of the show.
The series takes place 400 years in the future and primarily follows the crew of the Orville, an exploratory vessel tasked with venturing out into the far reaches of the universe. Obviously, it’s impossible not to draw many similarities to the Star Trek franchise. The outfits, ships, aliens, and overall look of the show is very reminiscent of the original 60s show. Recently Netflix has brought out the next iteration of Star Trek as a Netflix Original titled Star Trek: Discovery. Similar to MacFarlane’s show Discovery also received mixed reviews but curiously quite a few Trek fans enjoyed The Orville more.
But has this positive fan reception secured a second season for the show?
Returning and New Cast Members
The main cast that plays the crew of the Orville consist of:
- Seth MacFarlane – Captain Ed Mercer
- Adrianne Palicki – First Officer Kelly Grayson
- Penny Johnson Jerald – Doctor Claire Finn
- Scott Grimes – Helmsman Gordon Malloy
- Peter Macon – Second Officer Bortus
- Halston Sage – Chief of Security Alara Kitan
- J. Lee – Navigator John LaMarr
- Mark Jackson – Science Officer Issac
As well as this sizeable main cast, the first season included some larger stars making an appearance including Charlize Theron and Liam Neeson. So expect some big names featuring in the second season.
Star of Gossip Girl Jessica Szohr has been confirmed to be joining the cast, along with another newcomer Chris Johnson.
Shortly after the conclusion of the first season, it was unclear whether the series would be returning to Hulu at all. But to the relief of fans on the 2nd of November 2017, Fox officially renewed the series for a second season.
With Seth himself following up with a tweet:
To correct a bit of misreporting: No, there won’t be an Orville/Family Guy crossover, and yes, The Orville season 2 will arrive later this year.

When will Season 2 of The Orville come to Hulu?
At the time of writing, no solid release date, or even trailer has been released to our screens. But we don’t think it’ll be too long now until we get our hands on the first footage. The trailer that was released for the first season was unveiled during Fox’s presentation in 2017, so we expect a similar situation this year.
The likely premiere date will be around October/November 2018.
